San Diego business boxed in by travails

As the Russian economy continues to disintegrate and newly appointed Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov struggles to keep the Kremlin from collapse, San Diego businessman Paul Tyutin is getting nervous about his upcoming business expedition to the Russian hinterlands.

Until the past couple weeks, the bad news for the ruble was good news for Tyutin, who specializes in buying ornately painted lacquer boxes in Russia and selling them to collectors over the Internet.

HNC purchase to expand product line

Open Solutions will bring new markets

HNC Software announced plans yesterday to acquire Open Solutions, a Connecticut company that makes software to process loans, deposits and other transactions for small banks.

Open Solutions' shareholders will receive 3 million shares of HNC stock and options, which values the deal at about $124 million, based on yesterday's closing price.

Economy steadily growing, Fed says

But effects of foreign woes now felt in U.S.

WASHINGTON -- Economic hard times abroad have begun to strike some parts of the United States harder and have American business owners and families worried about the future, the Federal Reserve said yesterday.

Overall, however, the U.S. economy continues moderate growth, the Fed's most recent survey of regional economies, released yesterday, found.

$16 million sought for 10 projects

San Diego County is seeking more than $16 million in federal funds for 10 development projects from Escondido to National City.

If approved, the projects could create as many as 9,000 jobs, according to the County Board of Supervisors, which approved the request Tuesday before sending it to the federal Economic Development Administration, an arm of the Commerce Department.

STOCKS
 Stock prices pushed higher, giving Wall Street its first four-session winning streak since before the market began its steep summer slide. The Dow industrials overcame a late 62-point deficit to post a gain. Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 3-to-2 ratio on the New York Stock Exchange, where composite volume totaled 946.71 million shares, resuming the hectic pace of recent weeks after a two-session pause.
DOLLAR
 The greenback rose against most major currencies as Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan told Congress no interest rate cuts are planned to halt the worldwide financial crisis.
COMMODITIES
 Corn and soybean prices closed lower in Chicago as harvest activity picked up around the Corn Belt states of the Midwest.
