Alexander Vasilievich Borunov, Honored Artist of Russia, was born in 1920 in the village of Timofeevka in the Ivanovo Region. He studied at the Palekh Art School under P.L. Parilov, N.M.Zinovyev, A.V. Kotukhin and N.A. Pravdin from 1935 to 1940. Alexander Vasilievich was a teacher at the Palekh Art School since 1956. Borunov joined the Union of Artists of USSR in 1950. He was awarded the title "Merited Artist of Russian Federation" in 1974. The artist was the head appraiser of the Palekh Art Council in the 1960s.
He has pioneered in creating lacquer miniature paintings on papier mache, book illustrations, plaques. Borunov took part in the restoration of a plaque in the Monplaisir Palace in Peterhof in 1947 (St. Petersburg), he also restored frescoes of the Assumption Cathedral, the Annunciation Cathedral and the Archangel Cathedral in the Kremlin, Troitsa Sergieva Louvra (Patriarch's Residence) and the Trinity Cathedral in Zagorsk. Borunov also illustrated the novel "Digging Over" by O. Gonchar in 1962.
The themes of his works are folklore, contemporary live, and troikas. The most popular author's pieces are "The Fight of Ruslan and Rogday", "Bad Workmen", "Deer", "Dmitriy Donskoy", "The Little Humpbacked Pony", "Forest Song", "Malchish-Kibalchish", "Paul Robson", "The Last Sheaf", "Bazhov's Tales", "Frunze - the Commander of the Turkmenistan Front".
These master's works and many others have been exhibited since 1949. The art pieces by Alexander Vasilievich entered collections of such museums as the State Museum of Palekh Art, State Russian Museum, Central Museum of Armed Forces, Folk Art Musuem, Vyatskiy Regional Art Museum, Ivanovo Regional Art Museum, Shuya Memorial M.F. Frunze Museum, Irkutsk Regional Art Museum, Nijniy Novgorod Art Museum, Art Museum in Minsk.
