Dmitry Nicolaevich Butorin, Honored Figure of Arts, was born in 1891 in Palekh in Vladimir Region into a family of an icon-painter, and died in 1960 in his native village. Dmitry Nicolaevich studied at the educational workshops of the Committee of Russian Icon-Painting Guardianship (1906-1914), then at the icon-painting workshop in Petergurg. Butorin made replicas of I.I. Golikov's art pieces and studied fine arts under him. Afterwards Butorin taught at the Palekh Art College (1930-1934), and then at the Palekh Art School (1934-1960).

His subject matter included fairy-tales, historical events, everyday scenes, folklore, and troikas. The examples of his outstanding art work are miniatures "Battle", "Meeting", "Meeting of Yuriy Dolgorukiy with Igor Svyatoslavovich", "Knight and Mermaid", "Danko", "Don Quixote", "Reapers", "Smiths", "Forest Tsar", "Musicians", "Peoples of the USSR", "Nikita Kozhemyaka", "He and She", "Autumn", "Turnip", "Ruslan and Ludmila", "Debate of Dood-Goblins", "Tsarevich Leads out his Horse". These works and many other ones have been participants of exhibitions since 1928.

Art pieces by Butorin are displayed in many museums, among them are the State Museum of Palekh Art, Zagorsk State Historical and Art Museum-Park, Folk Art Museum, Russian Folk Arts and Crafts Museum, State Russian Museum, State Art Museum (Nizhniy Novgorod), Russian A.S. Pushkin Museum, Ivanovo Regional Art Museum, State Tretiyakov Gallery, Nizhniy Tagil Arts Museum, Central Armed Forces Museum.
