Alexander Kurkin was born in 1916 in Sibliev Hamlet in the Rostov Region. He studied at the Palekh Art School from 1935-1040. He worked at the Palekh Art Workshop from 1940-1976, except between 1941-1945, when he served at the front.
Themes of Kurkin's works include folklore, contemporary subjects, and genre scenes. Major works include "The Scarlet Flower", "Driving Across Berlin", "The Water Nymph", "The Machine-Gun Cart", and "Bread". He has been exhibiting his work since 1955, and many of his pieces are now held in the State Museum of Palekh Art, the State Russian Museum, the Central Museum of the Armed Forces, the Ivanovo Regional Art Museum, and the M.V. Fruze Museum.
