Fedor Kaurtsev was born on December 23, 1896 in the village of Palekh, where he passed away on February 16, 1963. He studied in N.M. Safanov's studio from 1907-1912, then joined the Artel of Ancient Painting in 1928. He later taught at the Palekh Art School from 1943-1963.
Themes of Kaurtsev's work included literature, genre scenes and landscapes ("Vasili Tyorkin", "Dead Souls", "On the Volga", "Why Do You Cry, Maiden?", "The Last Campaign", "Birds", "The Postmaster", and "The Angler").
