Vladimir Vlezko of Palekh paints the two scenes found on this box. The two scenes are from the fairy tale, "The Golden Cockerel." The scene on the lid is from the beginning of the tale when the astrologer comes to Tsar Dadon and offers him his services. The scene wrapping seamlessly around the side of the box is actually two scenes in one. The first is of Tsar Dadon when he comes upon the Queen of Shemakha, when he falls in love with her and asks her to come back to his kingdom to be married to him. The next scene on the side of the box is when Tsar Dadon and the Queen return to his kingdom to find that the astrologer who provided the Golden Cockerel wants the hand of the queen. In this portion of the story, which is towards the conclusion, the tsar kills the astrologer then is killed himself by the Cockerel.
The primary medium used to depict the paintings on this box is egg-tempera paint. The color patterns used show the distinct style of Vlezko as a painter. His palette is bold and vibrant. He pays great attention to detail and the mood or tone of the scene at that moment of the story. Like many Palekh artists, Vlezko uses a great amount of gold detailing in his compositions, he also uses aluminum paint for the same reason but to a lesser extent. The outlining, detailing, and highlighting with gold and aluminum paint is subtle, for the amount used, yet makes the box glow and radiate a great deal of light. Though there is no color present in the sky it does not necessarily mean that the scene took place at night. Leaving out sky color is also a characteristic of Palekh painters.
The decoration of the rest of the box is quite simple. Vlezko applies gold beading to the edge of the lid and around the edge of the base. On the bases interior he also applies finely painted gold scrollwork to the top of the wall that raises off of the base. This lack of decoration lets the viewer focus on the great artistic display since the eye is not being bombarded with complex patterns that are around the composition. The simplicity in the decoration of this piece yields striking results.
The box is constructed out of high-grade paper-mache and is in two seprate pieces. The first piece is the one with the two paintings on it. It's exterior is painted with black lacquer and it's interior is painted with red lacquer. The second piece is the base, which rests on three rounded feet. It's exterior is also black and it's interior is also red. The base has a wall that raises 1/2 of an inch off of it so that the box has the ability to store very small items. When the primary piece is put onto the base it fits like a glove and there is barely any indication that it is a box at all.
Materials: paper-mache, egg-tempera paint, black and red lacquer, gold paint, and aluminum paint.
