Terentyev of Palekh is the artist that paints the depiction from the story, "The Princess Frog," on this box. This scene takes place at the end of the story when Prince Ivan and his Princess are reunited. Her name is Vasalisa and she is the one who was a frog earlier in the story. However Ivan found this out and burned her frogskin while she was in the human form. After this she vanished and became a prisoner of Koschei the Deathless. Not until meeting Baba Yaga and finding out how to kill Koschei and free his love was he able to see her.

Egg-tempera paint is the primary medium used to paint this composition. The main colors used are bold green and orange paint against the black lacquer background. Gold and aluminum paints are used to decorate, detail, and outline features in the composition. Gold paint is used more than the aluminum paint but both work equally well in capturing light. Icon-painting techniques are incorporated into this painting to give the box a Palekh sense of style. Though the sky is not colored in it does not mean that the scene is taking place at night. However this scene is supposed to have taken during the day, but another Palekh trademark is to not color in the sky.

Gold paint is also used to decorate the exterior of the box that is independent of the composition. The gold scrollwork that frames the composition on the lid is fine and the design is precise all the way around the painting. A rolling design makes up the scrollwork that wraps round the side of the box under the opening. It too is intricate and delicately applied like the scrollwork on the lid.

The box is made out of lightweight yet strong paper-mache. The box does not have a hinge and rests on a flat bottom. The exterior of the box is painted with black lacquer and the interior is painted with red lacquer. Upon completion of the piece the artist writes Palekh, 1999, and his name at the bottom of the composition.

Materials: paper-mache, egg-tempera paint, black and red lacquer, gold paint, and aluminum paint.
