This antique miniature features a middle-aged Russian noble woman, or boyaryshina, posing next to one of the fences of her estate. The scene is an interpretation of an oil on canvas original by the famous Russian painter Konstantin Makovsky. Many of his works are currently displayed in the collections of the Tretiakov Gallery in St. Petersburg. Examples of this scene on lacquer art can be found in several books, including V. Guliayev's RUSSIAN LACQUERED MINIATURES on pages 44 and 45, L. Pirogova's book 200 YEARS OF RUSSIAN LACQUERY on page 56, as well as on page 65 of N. Krestovskaya's MASTERPIECES OF RUSSIAN FOLK ART: LACQUERED MINIATURES--FEDOSKINO.

Because of the age of this piece, most of the layers of clear lacquer have evaporated away, leaving the ridges of the painting exposed. But the bright colors used to paint the scene are by no means diminished. The artist, Alexey Kruglikov, has done a good job on both the foliage in the foreground, and the countryside in the background.

The lid is hinged from the left side of the composition, and the box sits flat. There is naturally some wear on this box, particularly on the interior, but such a classic composition from a bygone era is worthy of any great collection. (Fedoskino)

Materials: paper-mache, black and red lacquer, oil paint.
