Russian ethnographer and storyteller Alexander Afanasiev compiled and published the best known collection of Russian tales around the middle of the nineteenth century. The numerous tales were slowly gathered, rewritten, then presented in three separate volumes. Raduga Publishers of Moscow is continuing this tradition by offering the collection of Russian Folk Tales from Alexander Afanasiev's Collection. This volume is titled "Words of Wisdom" after one of the stories in this volume.
These popular folk and fairy tales are often used in miniature lacquer art in all three villages. This volume happens to be illustrated with wonderful prints of lacquer art by Alexander Kurkin, a famous and well-established artist from Palekh. Each of the stories begins with a close-up of a colorful painting at the top of the page above the title of the tale, then there is a full-size print of a lacquer box by Kurkin to accompany it (see the sample pages). There are 176 pages with forty-two stories in all!
