This book focuses on the breathtaking art of Fedoskino lacquer miniature, and is an indispensable resource, guide, and eye-pleaser! The book is hardbound, and the pages are large and glossy, which enhances the pictures nicely.
The text which makes up the large ten-page introduction has been translated into English in this edition, and is written by Nadezhda Krestovskaya. She gives an in-depth history of the development of paper-mache and miniature painting in Russia, beginning with the early Korobov factory, then to the Lukutin and Vishnyakov workshops, and finally ending in Fedoskino. The bulk of the book contains full color prints of lacquer miniatures from the collections of the State Russian Museum, the State History Museum, and the All-Russia Museum of Decorative, Applied and Folk Art.
The beautiful pictures are boxes are all numbered and have the title, type of box, artist, and the date on the same page. The numbers are then referenced in an indexed catalog in the back of the book that also lists the artists' birth year, the materials used and the size of the box. There are several pages in the book that show the lacquer articles displayed together on a stand or dresser, with detail images of the individual boxes following. Included as well are lithographs that inspired the early Fedoskino and Vishnyakov compositions, and a list of abbreviations used in the box identifications.
The final portion of this incredible reference tool is a section on "Maker's Marks on Fedoskino Products of the 19th through the 20th Century". This displays samples of the inscriptions and labels on boxes from the Lukutin, Vishnyakov, Fedoskino and other artels and their corresponding dates of use. This is a treasure for those interested in older pieces, for dating and verifying authenticity of older boxes.
