The genre of Russian lacquer artistry has been created through inspiration. It has also caused some inspiration of its own. Art is a very powerful thing. It causes reflection, leaves impression and welcomes opportunity. The opportunity to expand on the already. Artists from a variety of subjects, painting to film making, have created original works in order to awaken imagination. Have you ever pictured yourself on that stage, interacting with the stars? Are there dreams of that ideally adventurous vacation that might be too much to bear? The wishing well coin has resurfaced. This authentic piece of Russian artistry has accomplished these goals. For the forever, this loving couple will be a part of storied traditional craftsmanship. You can be too...

Each piece of lacquer art carries with it a piece of the artist as well as a gift of energy from the subject being depicted. This is extremely relevant when discussing portrait art. This wonderful example of Fedoskino artistry was composed by the talented Elena Korolyova. What is most impressive is that this piece was done on assignment. The couple depicted wanted to have a previous photograph of themselves incorporated into the composition of a lacquer box. The results speak for themselves. This is a stunning likeness of the original.

Oil-based paint is the primary medium used to compose this scene. Korolyova was given a photograph that had been fastened to a small, wooden placard. From that photograph, to her eyes, to her brush, to the canvas you see here. What is so exceptional is that this composition is even more vivid than the photograph given! Fedoskino is recognized through the years as being based upon realism. Korolyova pays a significant tribute.

One particular request made to the artist was to have the background altered significantly. The background of the original was extremely busy. Here, we have the angelic view of the Christ Our Savior Cathedral from a bridge running over the Moscow river. The sun sets romantically in the background as the clouds create their own symphony of well textured elegance. The natural and architectural beauty of Moscow is depicted magically.

This depiction is also a contrast in traditional reference. The ancient Chinese methods of lacquer painting, so appreciated by the couple, meet the Russian tradition that they've also fallen in love with. Dual appreciation that is a delightful subject to behold. China and Japan are well known as the homeland of fancy lacquer-work that is broadly varied in both style and technique. For many years Chinese lacquers were venerated as the classic model by the Europeans. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries Oriental lacquer-work began to spread to Europe from China, Japan, Iran and India. In the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries independent lacquer manufactories emerged in the western and eastern parts of Europe.

The box is constructed from paper-mache made in the village of Fedoskino. Besides the portrait, the exterior has been decorated with a gorgeous dye-resist pattern. This is made by dipping the box into a delicate mixture of colored paint pigment, water and paint thinner. The result here is a beautiful marble pattern comprised of purple and wisteria. The couple had the interior and exterior inscribed with personal names and celebration painted with bright gold paint. Birthdays, anniversaries, moments of achievement. These are just a few of the ideas that you can expand upon yourself.

The artist adds an inlay of mother-of-pearl behind the lady's clothing. This gives her a blossoming glow that only comes from years of practice. The edge of the lid and base are patterned with feathering golden filigree and the box rests on four angled feet carved from the bottom of the piece. Upon completion of the piece the artist writes their name and the village name of Fedoskino along the bottom of the composition.

Materials: Oil-based paint, paper-mache, gold paint, mother-of-pearl and lacquer.
