The antique. It reminds. It offers a view into the past. A view of how things were achieved and the changes that might've had to be made in order to secure success. The antique intrigues us. As the years speed by, value as well as personality increase. Something purchased as recently as today might be considered a rare antique down the road. We just never know. Other things contain a cobweb beauty that is singular to it. Fit the antique into a category, but it will always remain a feature unto itself. And that is what collecting is all about.

This is a very interesting piece that was created by Alexander Shchadrin over fifty years ago. Mstera has had many intriguing works over the years. It is always a treat to see what was, in order to comprehend what might be. Books related to Mstera, such as "THE FINE ART OF RUSSIAN LACQUERED MINIATURES by V. Guliayev 1993,"display Shchadrin's work as an example to the many students that will follow his genuinely traditional outlook on artistry.

In the early evening, the suitor waits. He isn't even supposed to be back from his trip for another three weeks. His bride to be will not complain in the least once her eyes meet his. A simple meeting can be quite beautiful.

This piece is typical of a piece you might have found resting on the desk of another artist or even a writer. Within the confines of the box there is evidence of a compartment that once was. Half of the interior appears to have been cut out. This may have been for a plume well or to hold an assortment of colored tempera paints for the artist. Because of the age of this box there is some weathering. The lower right corner of the lid displays the inner paper-mache as the lacquer has evaporated. There are no major breaks or chips, the entire structure of what was originally intended remains intact.

Egg-tempera paint is the primary medium used to compose the scene. Forest green, deep blue, maroon and yellow dominate the moment. The palette is dark in order to symbolize the coming of night. This horizon is very beautiful. This evening is very important to the suitor depicted. The mood is that of tranquility, and it lives without being overly simple.

Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The presentation itself is dual tiered. The box rests on a square placard that sits comfortably upon four angled feet carved from the bottom of it. Each one of these feet has a piece of velvet fastened to it. The entire piece has been carved from paper-mache made in the village of Mstera.

The closest edge of the composition is framed with a wreath of golden, flowered filigree. The outer edge of the lid is patterned with a four cornered filigree design, painted gold, that is connected by decorative bands of the same tone. The outer edge of the placard-like base is decorated as well. The same decoration is used as was previously mentioned around the lid's edge, except here we have a flowered filigree pattern as the decoration for the horizontal sides of the placard. Each feature compliments the next.

Upon completion of the piece the artist signs their name, the title of the work, the village name of Mstera and the year of 1949 of which the piece was finished along the bottom of the composition in gold paint.

Materials: Egg-tempera paint, paper-mache, gold paint and lacquer.
