Through the ages. Through the miles of adventurous exploration. On street corner stand and within museum glass. Art maintains a singular charisma all its own. Language and genre are of little matter. Appreciation is where the individual finds it. This piece is a classic example of tradition. Although simple, the characters within exude an expression that is very familiar to the many, even though the few have ever experienced this work. That expression, natural camaraderie.

The artist that developed this gorgeous antique chose to remain anonymous, which was common for the era in which this piece was created. All signs point to it being a special order. Wealthy merchants would often contract artist's to complete family portraits or even compositions depicting property and geographical locations frequented by said family. These would then be the children of the merchant. The depiction of children was the most popular and continues to be so, in regards to parents having something painted that they'll cherish through the years.

The box is constructed from paper-mache that has held up against the elements for numerous years. Black lacquer was used to paint the exterior of the piece, while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid removes easily without hinge. The original applications of gold paint and gold leaf can still be noticed as lustrous throughout the characters' clothing and the plates on the table.

The interior of the lid includes the insignia of the O.F. Vishnyakov Workshop, where works such as this were completed in the early 1880s. It has been stamped in gold paint. There is minimal cracking in the original coat of lacquer, which is remarkable considering that the box is over 100 years old.

Materials: Oil-based paint, paper-mache, gold paint, gold leaf and lacquer.

These unsung people, having contributed to the world of art over the years, have chosen to stay anonymous for various reasons. Whatever reasons they may be these artists have shown there is more to the world art than gaining notoriety. The idea of creating art for art's sake is what draws artists to want to create beauty. When an artist creates something truly beautiful, no matter if it is signed or not, that ... read about Anonymous,
