"So Columbus opened the America's, Magellan sailed around the tip of South America, Cook hopped around the islands of the South Pacific, and Balboa and Cortez started the exploitation of Pacific Coast of North America. What else is there to find in this world? I know the world is round, I have a map of the celestial sphere in my head to guide me at night, and an armada of ships at my disposal. In the name of all that has been done before, I am going to go out and try to do it better."
The sense of exploration is one of the many things, and an important one that distinguishes humans from the other living things on this planet. Even to this day we are finding new things because of our cat-like curiosity. Our robots have landed on Mars, satellites are reaching the outer limits of our solar system, and telescopes of every kind (radio, light, and visual) are looking for more information everyday that might make mankind just a bit smarter and wiser. However, sometimes we forget that we must solve the problems within the boundaries of our countries, then the ones with other countries, then the ones with our environment, and then can we truly be free to put our minds together and look for the dream of the next big discovery, and be ready for what might be there waiting for us to find.
Oil-based paint is the main medium used to paint this composition. This composition is a stylized representation painted in the context of a dream-like state. The palette is also stylized, which incorporates purples, blues, greens, browns, and whites to achieve the desired effect. The scroll, which is painted on a carved portion of the lid, is made to parallel the motion of water as it breaks in the form of a wave; this also give the box, literally, and 3-D quality that is superb. The blend and transition of this area is very smooth and creates great movement. An inlay of mother-of-pearl is set into the center of the scroll, which is also the center of the composition. This pulls the eye into the middle of the scene then allows it to scan the rest of the piece from the inside out. Gold is also used to outline and highlight key areas of the composition in the ships, the captain's clothing, and the scroll. Gold is also used in powder form to make the transparent mist around the perimeter of the painting.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache made in Fedoskino. Beautiful dark blue dye resist patterns cover the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box; the entire box is covered with layers of clear lacquer that are polished to a smooth and reflective finish. The box has a hinge to its left and rests on a flat bottom. Upon completing the work on this piece the artist writes Fedoskino, '01, and his signature at the bottom of the composition.
Materials: paper-mache, oil-based paint, mother-of-pearl, gold, and lacquer.
