This celebratory beauty was created through experience. It exemplifies professional craftsmanship.
Eventually, the student is capable of becoming the teacher. Studies engulf the senses, and intrigue, within the educational process, is created. As the student learns, they may be introduced to inspiration. Something that their teacher does or says will grab hold of their already artistic intellect, taking them down avenues of creativity that have never been traveled before. These avenues expand and expand, leading to an inner discovery that the artist presents through the medium of their choosing. Former student turned teacher, Vladimir Vlezko, represents his village of Palekh in proud fashion with this gorgeous composition in miniature.
Egg-tempera paint is the primary medium used to complete this version of a Russian wedding celebration. The characters composed have great reason to be as happy as they appear to be. As customary with the Russian wedding day, the families of the newlyweds provide various gifts to each guest to express sincere gratitude in honoring the new couple. Music rules the atmosphere, laughter blares throughout the hall and love bounces off the walls in more ways than one. This is a tantalizing assortment of color and ornamentation.
The box is constructed from paper-mache made in the village of Palekh. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer competes the interior of the work. Following the Palekh tradition, this black lacquer background also acts as the background for the scene. This thoroughly enhances the palette as well as the decorative elements of the composition.
There is a luxurious romanticism that goes along with this composition. The sky blue in the curtains compliments the apricot flavored tones found in the table cloth. Because of the tremendous variance in the colors of the characters' clothes, the scene flows much more smoothly. The flowers along the bottom of the scene look magnificent against the olive green tiled floor. All of the features within this scene have been contoured with bright gold paint.
The lid's artistry is framed with flawless golden scrollwork that has exceptional, medieval appeal. The base side decoration is very attractive. Large expanses of tightly configured leaves roll extend among bright aluminum wild flowers as one singular band of beauty. A hinge has been fastened to the top of the composition for ease of opening. The box rests upon four rounded feet carved as a portion of the base. Upon completion of the piece the artist signs their name, the village name of Palekh and the year of 2003 of which the piece was finished along the bottom of the composition in gold paint.
Materials: Egg-tempera paint, paper-mache, gold paint, aluminum paint and lacquer.
