Energy is rarely paused. It is a dynamic facet of the everyday. This moves, that slides, they run, it drops, we climb. There are explosions, waves, winds, whines, plops and numerous other releases and conductors. Too many to name, there are. Occasionally, that energy can be put on hold. It is rare, but it can be done. When it does happen, crash.
This lavish strut of a parade was moving along at an obnoxious pace. One that was quite a regular occurrence in these parts. The well to do make great hood ornaments. A chorus of conversation surrounds this decorative advance. Curiosity as a whisper, it fills the air fully. And then it all stops. Just like that. The energy is moved off the burner in mid-boil. The Astrologer asks permission of the Tsar. Permission to take what he believes to be owed. The Tsar's response? Gross viciousness that will begin his end. Deals are made for a reason.
This beautiful piece of authentic Russian artistry was created by the talented Tatyana Mayevskaya from the village of Palekh. Everything here blends and accentuates. An odd combination, but a very applaudable one. The colors dazzle the eyes in a variety of ways. Charming glamour that exudes the energy of the moment. At least the one put on hold, that is.
Egg-tempera paint is the primary medium used to compose this masterful addition to any collection. The scene itself comes from the tail end of the powerful story entitled, "The Tale of the Golden Cockerel." This story is one of the many tales written by Russia's most beloved poet, Alexander Pushkin. Here, we see the greedy Tsar Dadon as he rises his scepter in anger against the helpless Astrologer. The Astrologer has just asked for the hand of the Queen of Shemakha, an agreed upon prize due the Astrologer, payment for the Golden Cockerel itself. The Tsar should've known, with every action comes reaction. But he'll learn that soon enough.
The box is constructed from paper-mache made in the village of Palekh. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while a radiant red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge has been fastened to the top of the composition to be used for ease of opening. An intricate pattern of flowered golden vine work has been painted as the framing for the composition. The minute flowers have been added with bright aluminum paint. The base side decoration is much larger. It is actually an expanded, or magnified version of the lid's decoration. A wonderful parallel it is.
As customary with Palekh tradition, the black lacquer exterior also acts as the background for the scene. This increases the beauty of the palette tremendously. The pinks and reds look brilliant when painted next to the lush greens that grow almost everywhere. There is great clarity in this work. Everything appears clean and very well organized. The geometry of the architecture is exact. The artist's use of intricate gold and aluminum contours acts as the spotlight for the entire presentation. The characters' clothes, the foliage, the manes of the horses and the structures all receive an added luster because of the contours.
Upon completion of the piece the artist signs their name, the village name of Palekh and the year of 2003 of which the piece was finished along the bottom of the composition in gold paint.
Materials: Egg-tempera paint, paper-mache, gold paint, aluminum paint and lacquer.
