Eventually, all of the snow will melt. The holiday season will disappear into the calendar's horizon. Coats will be replaced with short sleeves. The sleds will be placed back into the rafters and the shovels will be used for something else. Thankfully, we all have memories. What is the now, will always be a part of our forever. Moments like this need to be cherished. Always.

S. Panarina of Fedoskino is the exceptional talent responsible for this gorgeous piece of genuine Russian artistry. It is utterly amazing just how much detail and personality can be fit within the smallest of surfaces. The characters here are very well animated and they are capable of inducing smiles from any angle.

Oil-based paint is the primary medium used to create this impressive display of setting and artistic organization. Family and friends gather in the center of the village to build the snowman of their dreams. However, there is a bit of nervous energy in the air. He looks at her and they look at them. A snow ball fight? It is much more than a possibility. Apparently, it is time to laugh the day away.

This oval box is constructed from paper-mache made in the village of Fedoskino. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the work while a radiant red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The lid of the piece removes easily without hinge. The portion of the lid that contains the composition is slightly raised away from the outermost edge. This feature enhances the golden scrollwork that decorates this region of the box. The base has been patterned with golden filigree vines accentuated with sky blue flower petals.

The artist has created a very realistic depiction of snow. It just seems to sit right, as if there really is a surface underneath all the powdery white. The clothing worn by the villagers is also very well done. To create authenticity along with extremely intricate folds and ruffles, takes the most experienced hands. Tiny fragments of gold leaf enhance the light in the background windows, the bucket atop the snowman and a few fringes within the clothes. This piece is a delight, layer by beautiful layer.

Upon completion of the piece the artist signs their name, the title, the village name of Fedoskino and the year of 2001 of which the piece was finished along the bottom of the composition.

Materials: Oil-based paint, paper-mache, gold paint, gold leaf and lacquer.
