The autocratic ruler of the lands, the lord of Kiev sits on his throne, surrounded by the guard and the boyars. Merchants are bringing gifts and presents to please the high taxation authority. The box shows a scene from the fairy tale Tsar Saltan. Here the old king is brought the news of a magnificent island in the far off lands. The merchants are talling their story about prince Gvidon and Princess Swan. After hearing this story, the Tsar will embark on a journey by sea to become friends with Gvidon, who actually is Saltan's banished son...
The primary medium used to paint this lacquer box is egg tempera. The scene is lavishly decorated and a rich array of color is used. This is quite unusual for Palekh pieces to you color in the background. However, the artist is the master and we're the audience. Microscope thin foliage designs frame the picture on the lid and decorate the sides of the box. Deep green lacquer is used to paint the outer shell of the box, while traditional red lacquer is used for the inside. Gold paint is used to highlight the details in the picture. The box is hinged to the left of the composition and has no legs.
