In "Masters of Fedoskino," a recent publication by Interbook Publishers, Moscow, the original work that this piece is based on can be found on page 135. The original was rendered by Yelena Khomutinikova, a student of Gennady Larishev, who has made quite a name for herself in the Fedoskino art world. Both this piece and Khomutinikova's were completed in the same year, which makes this 1998 vintage piece one that does not show up on the market often.
The scene depicts two adorably dressed young ladies on a walk. It's a sunny day and with fashionable parasols they make their way where everyone can see them. They get the attention of a young baker who has just taken a batch of small crispy bagels (called "boubliki" in Russian) out of the oven. It looks as though there is more than just a sale taking place. Two entranced faces trade looks that could melt any heart.
Oil-based paint is the main medium used to paint this composition. The artist uses a palette similar to the one used in the original. Soft pastels are found in the sky, the grasses, and in the clothing of the main characters. Light tan colors make up the wooden village architecture to bring an all encompassing visual aesthetic to the scene. The compositional aesthetic is made by giving an irregular balance to the linear construction. Each detail is meticulously managed to create contours and give life and emotion to the characters and the action taking place. Even the dandelions in the soft light on the grass are rendered so that they stand as individual entities, crucial to the overall success of the work.
The box is made out of paper-mache made in Fedoskino. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box; clear lacquer is added in layers that are polished to a gleaming finish. Gold ornamentation frames the scene on the lid and wraps around the sides of the box. Both patterns are highly intricate and complex in their designs. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on four rounded feet. Upon completing the work on this piece the artist writes Fedoskino, '98, and signs her name at the bottom of the composition. The Fedoskino "troika" insignia can be found on the interior of the lid.
