The magic sea. An all encompassing stage where the production of adventure takes place day after day, and night after night. There have been fierce pirate plunders, hurricane development and relaxation via the sail. Travel, discovery, exploration. They all reside within the confines of the magic sea. Waves will crash and the currents will glide. Creatures interact, business is carried out and recreation conducts itself with the utmost energy from all corners of the earth. Where will you go? What will you do? What will you see? All a part, of the magic sea.
This alluring piece of authentic Russian artistry was created by the immensely talented Alexander Kuznetsov from the village of Kholuy. He creates festive atmospheres through tantalizing color combinations. And this piece is no exception.
Egg-tempera paint is the primary medium used to complete the work on this composition. The artist depicts a loving couple that lives in a seaside village. They tend to a net they have left over night. They will be quite happy with the resulting catch. It is very interesting to see how the artist combines the human element with the natural element of the ocean in such a soothing way. They appear as part of one whole. Sea greens, navy blue and orange make up a great deal of the coloration. The fish and the characters' clothes are expertly executed. There is great flow and shape variance. The artist also makes fine use of bright gold paint. Whether it's the netting, underwater foliage or accents upon the characters' clothes; this lustrous gold feeds off the light in the room as well as the other colors of the palette.
The box is constructed from paper-mache made in the village of Kholuy. The box has been carved into the shape of a clam, complete with ruffled edges. The interior of the lid has several concave curves carved into it as well. The exterior of the piece is painted with black lacquer while the interior is completed using dark red lacquer. The interior edge of the base has been patterned with shimmering golden beads outlined with aluminum paint. This decoration can only be seen when the lid is opened. A hinge is fastened to the top of the composition for ease of opening.
A special compartment resides within the box. Besides the larger interior space, the artist provides a small compartment covered with a pearl shaped lid. The lid is painted with a minute seascape that features one adorable sunfish painted mostly with gold and red orange. This lid removes without the use of a hinge.
Upon completion of the piece the artist signs their name, the title and the village name of Kholuy within the lid's clam shaped interior in gold paint.
Materials: Egg-tempera paint, paper-mache, gold paint, aluminum paint and lacquer.
