They offer friendship, protection. For now, she is quite comfortable in the lonely. These seven will respect her wish. Eventually, the tune will change. She'll be in dire need of their company. Without even knowing it, she will. This simple meeting will evolve into the fairest of fairy-tales. And that is what it is all about. Heroes having a job in wait, answering the call when least expected. Who could've expected what will happen next? Only the author knows. And that, is the most beautiful part of all.

This gorgeous representation of fairy-tale was created by the talented Yevgeniy Populov from the village of Palekh. The artist had certainty working for him while constructing the beauty within this artistry. He knew exactly where everything was supposed to be. It is this sense of organization that has determined quality as well as creativity. The proof is in this hand painted pudding.

Egg-tempera paint is the primary medium used to compose this assembly of characters from the romantic adventure entitled, "The Sleeping Princess and the Seven Bogatyrs." The Princess stands on the front steps of her newly found home as all seven of her strapping companions prepare to leave for the hunt. This group just happens to be the Seven Mighty Bogatyrs. She met them while she was led deceitfully into the woods.

However, she got away and came to their home, a spectacular palace. She started cleaning and by the time they got back the whole place was clean. She promised them that if she could stay, and have them protect her, she would keep their mess down to a minimum and cook for them, sometimes. As they are leaving they have no idea that she will be cast into a deep sleep by a poisoned apple. No worries though, shortly after they lay her in her crystal coffer, Prince Yelisey finds her and revives her with true love. Fairy-tale perfect.

The box is constructed from paper-mache made in the village of Palekh. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the piece. A hinge is fastened to the top of the composition to be used for ease of opening. The lid's composition has been framed with a bright string of golden beads. The base side decoration is much more elaborate. Elegant golden filigree swirls wave too and fro, while reflective aluminum wild flowers accentuate the pattern throughout. The box rests upon an oval bottom that bends outward causing the box to hover above any flat surface! At least that is the illusion created.

There is great clarity in the composition. The forest is pristine and very natural looking. As customary with Palekh tradition, the black lacquer exterior also acts like the background for the scene. This furthers the intense beauty of the gold and aluminum contours. The characters are painted much brighter, making them the definitive focus of this delightful production. The armor of the bogatyrs and the leaves in the trees are particularly noteworthy. This is a very classy creation.

Upon completion of the piece the artist signs their name, the village name of Palekh and the year of 2003 of which the piece was finished along the bottom of the composition in gold paint.

Materials: Egg-tempera paint, paper-mache, gold paint, aluminum paint and lacquer.
