To be in harmony with nature. What better recreational activity can you find? To see the hidden corners of a deep forest, to breath the fresh air, to see animals of the wild and to gather provisions for a grand dinner. There is no hunting, there is no game involved. The talented artist Denis Molodkin of Mstera depicts a couple gathering mushrooms. This is one of Russia's favorite past-time activities.
Obviously, gathering mushrooms is one of Molodkin's favorite things to do. Where else would the artist look for inspiration, then the hidden corners of Mother Nature's gardens – the deep woods of Russia. With a basket in his left hand and a knife in his right hand the self portrait artist kneels down to gather the king of all mushrooms, the catch of the day – the big white mushroom! He carefully cuts of the thick stem, to ensure the roots stay in the earth. The mushroom must re-produce for itself and other mushroom gatherers. A rare bird springs into the air from a wild raspberry bush nearby. And a giant moose in the background just noticed the intruders to its domain. Sounds of a babbling brook and falling leafs feed the couple's hearing with the symphonies of natures. Now its time to reflect on the beauty at hand, to see, to feel, to gather, to record.
Egg tempera is the main medium used in this composition. The box is constructed of high grade papier mache in the village of Mstera. A thin band of gold paint defines the border of the intricate painting on the lid. A second band of gold and silver foliage filigree frames the composition. A similar band decorates the side of the box. The lid is hinged to the top of the composition and the bottom rests on four rounded legs. Upon completing his work, the artists sings and dates the box: Mstera 2003 in the lower left corner, Denis Moloding in the lower right corner of the lid, beneath the picture.
Materials: papier-mache, egg tempera, gold paint, aluminum paint, lacquer.
