The Mythic Britain has a new king. Arthur. Numerous novels, songs and stories tell a tale of honor and glory.
This exquisite box is carved from papier-mache in the village of Fedoskino. The surface is decorated in a rich die resist pattern, which resembles aged metal of medieval armor. The young knight is painted with oil paint. The artist displays meticulous attention to detail in every aspect of the picture. The chain mill, the cloak and the ornamentation which adorns the corners, edges and sides has been brilliantly executed with precision.
The original canvas painting was created by Charles Earnest Butler in 1903. Fedoskino artist Fomichev chose the romantic image of young Arthur to be scaled down to adorn a lacquer box. The picture, the shape, the decoration and the golden filigree create a magical composition with a rich royal and mysterious mood.
The box is hinged at the top of the box and rests on four elegant legs. Upon completing his work, Sergey Fomichev signs the box under the picture.
