The artwork depicted on this lacquer box in the accompanying photographs is different from traditional scenes of Russian fairy tales and other custom art. The logos are simple in design and the color palate is easily rendered.
The boxes were a custom order from a martial arts studio called Taebaek Taekwondo Academy. The master instructor, who is of Russian background, teaches Korean Taekwondo at Alpert Jewish Community Center in Long Beach, California. The logo itself is a compilation and representation of the instructor's training and experiences in the art.
The figure in the middle, around which the emblem is designed, was rendered by the instructor's younger son, when he was still in kindergarten. The figure is a modern-art depiction of a roundhouse kick. The red and blue symbol behind the figure is the Taegeuk, the principal symbol in the Korean flag. The circle around the Taegeuk stands for the members of the studio. The white field represents the land of America, repeating the same meaning in the Korean flag.
Korean lettering occupies a position of preeminence, with English in the subordinate position. The positions of the two languages represent opposites: Korean is Eastern philosophy, English is Western philosophy, both being in balance and harmony. Gold represents the highest level of excellence, and also depicts the path of striving for, and achievement of, that highest level. Ranks below Black Belt wear a logo patch on their uniforms with gold lettering to remind them of the path of excellence they embarked on. Black Belts wear a patch with Korean lettering in red, and English in blue, representing harmony and balance with themselves and the world.
The artwork was done by Olga Filkina, Mstera artist. She used an exact replica of the school's insignia to paint on this box. As anyone can see, the results are sensational and in the best traditions of Russian lacquer box artistry. She uses egg-tempera paint as the medium for the solid colors, and gold paint for the figure in the center and the lettering. The box is made out of paper-mache from Mstera. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer the interior of the box. Gold scrollwork elegantly wraps around the sides of the box. The box has no hinge and rests on a flat bottom.
Materials: paper-mache, egg-tempera paint, gold, and lacquer.
