It is time for class and everyone is going to listen up. Pay attention, this is very important. Today the lesson will be read directly from this famous book on fairy tales and legends. There will be scary things like witches, wizards, and monsters. But there will also be beautiful princesses, handsome princes, and heroes that save the day no matter who stands in their way. And if class is really good we will all go straight to have tea at the table set in the backyard.
During childhood there is so much room for imagination and so much time to use it. Kids see grown-ups doing their jobs, working around the house, and making a living. Not many children realize the true impact that their parents have on their lives, they just give unconditional love because it is one of the things they know how to do very well. However, why let the grown-ups have all the fun? Kids often show they are capable of doing things just as well as adults. But to teach a class is something tough for a youngster to pull off, unless they have an audience that isn't going anywhere.
Oil-based paint is the main medium used to paint this composition. The palette uses a realistic blend of earthtones and colors saturated with red. This gives the effect of a late afternoon with a sun slowly moving through a hazy sky. All the details are rendered with a master's hand that shows the girl being very stern with her students, and her students slumping over in their mannequin state. The artist uses good blending and shading techniques to achieve maximum benefit from the setting presented in the scene. By painting the umbrella behind the girl's stool it gives a clue that she is sitting outside with her class of dolls despite the possibility of rain.
The box is made out of paper-mache made in Fedoskino. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box; clear lacquer is added in layers and polished down to give the box a smooth and reflective shine. The artist frames the scene with scrollwork and paints a similar design on the bottom of the box in gold. The design on the bottom actually frames a small gold design with red beading in the center of the box's bottom. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on an edge carved out of the bottom of the box. Upon completing the work on this piece the artist writes Fedoskino, 1999, and signs his name at the bottom of the scene.
Materials: paper-mache, oil-based paint, gold, and lacquer.
