This piece is an interpretation of an original painted by famous Natalya Leonova. She is famous for her depiction of horses, and this troika scene, although not painted by her, shows the original intent of the artist. It is a beautiful composition and can be found on page 71 in 200 Years of Russian Lacquery by Ludmila Pirogova.
It's a cold winter day and there is not much to do. The meals have been cooked, the homes have been cleaned, and now it's time to have some fun. The horses are all bridled up and the sled has been attached. Now all these two bachelors need is some female company. It must be their lucky day and seems that after a round of coaxing these four will enjoy a wild ride on the roads outside the village. Hopefully these free spirited teens thought enough to bring some blankets, because if not, this might turn out to be a much shorter ride than they expected. The snow will be on the ground for another few months and the chances of this taking place are very good, but when an opportunity comes along such as this they better be ready to act.
Oil-based paint is the main medium used to paint this composition. The palette used has two things working for it. One, the artist uses soft winter colors like white with hints of blue throughout. Two, the artist adds warm tones in areas of emphasis. This emphasis is particularly enhanced by the inlay of mother-of-pearl that runs from the central horse though all of the characters. The artist also adds a small inlay of gold leaf in the scarf and dress of the girl nearer to the foreground. There is a frenzy of movement in the horses that looking excited to run give the scene a highly animated feeling. Even the snow helps make the scene come to life with its wonderful variations from light to dark, which imitates shadows that might naturally appear on the ground.
The box is made out of paper-mache made in Fedoskino. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. Due to the lacquer's natural evaporation process the texture of the paint on the lid is beginning to show. Gold paint is used for the scrollwork that wraps around the sides of the box. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on a flat bottom. Upon completing the work on this piece the artist writes Fedoskino, the title, and signs his name at the bottom of the composition.
