Sometimes, in the end, nothing else matters.

As she got closer and closer to the surface, her thoughts were racing in and out of control marathon of possibility. Faster and faster her tail whipped. The depths of the sea were quickly subtracted into surface perfect. A rush of air hit her lungs like never before. The initial shock was a blast to the system. But, her resilient nature carried her further. Onto the shoreline for the very first time! The sun was a light that she couldn't handle. And as she anticipated, he was nowhere to be found. But, at least she tried. She'd return to the ocean, knowing that she gave the effort. He was there, that day. Watching from the cliffs. Sorrowful at the love that couldn't be. Thankful that she'd saved his life...

This unique beauty was crafted by the talented M.V. Potekhina from the village of Kholuy. The shape of the box speaks on behalf of the artist's creative ability. The colors are just as passionate as the expression on the mirrored character. She is a parallel in beauty and intentions. The mermaid strives for land, just as the artist toiled to finish this depiction of her. Both, goals that were necessary to be met.

Several days ago, this mermaid saved the life of a young sailor. A connection was made. A connection that could not be kept. She rushed towards the surface anyway, hoping that he might still be there, wanting to return below the surface with her. He hid out of sight, just hoping for one last look. And that he got. One that would stay with him for the rest of his days. Sometimes, in the end, nothing else matters.

Egg-tempera paint is the primary medium used to compose this work. All of the artistry has been painted upon a box carved into the shape of a whale. A crown-like fixture is noticed on the head of the mammal, this represents the water blasting forth from the whales spout. The mermaid is painted as if it were part of a sagittal plane. A parallel vision of the creature. Half of her wants to stay on land, the other half wishing to return to the sea. Cornflower, powder and sky blue make up the free moving atmosphere. The water appears to be in mid-splash. A fading shade of sea green acts as the light reflecting off the water's surface.

The box is constructed from paper-mache made in the village of Kholuy. Black lacquer was used to paint the exterior of the piece while bright red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The interior is also part of a stand that holds the whale upright. Its base edge is painted with a lovely seashore composition complete with sand, rocks and a curious crab. Bright splatters of gold spread across the tail on both sides of the lid. The crescent moon that hovers over the water is also painted with lustrous gold paint. Little golden beads form patterns of flowers on the pointed portions of the water blast.

The whale shaped lid removes easily without hinge. Upon completion of this piece the artist signs their name, the title and the year of 1999 of which the piece was finished along the bottom of the composition in brilliant gold.

Materials: Egg-tempera paint, paper-mache, gold paint and lacquer.
