Spreading rumors really works, especially when the rumors turn out to be true. All that passing of unsolicited information without much thought other than repeat. Rumors hinder and help. They cause distraction and they also inform ahead of time. If romance is involved, look out below! To figure the rumor, one must merely ask. If guessing is the only option used, then the rumor is fueled. Here, she comes right out and asks, "So, I've heard you'd like to make me dinner?" This rumor has melted away into a puddle of sentimental opportunity.
This lively composition comes courtesy of Fedoskino artist S.A. Bashilova. The characters are alert to the situation at hand, all due to the overflow of realism composed by the artist. Everything serves an equal purpose within the scene. The setting is just as impressive as the attire of the cast.
Oil-based paint is the primary medium used to compose the romantic meeting between the maiden and the craftsman. The lighting created within the day is superb. Hazy sunshine is offered through a mixture of apricots, caramel browns and musty sand colored tones. There is also great depth here. By increasing and decreasing the texture, the artist develops a foreground and background to go with the centralized action. This is primarily evident in the plants to the right and left or the progressive distance found in the forest trees beginning in the upper right.
The box is constructed from paper-mache made in the village of Fedoskino. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge is fastened to the top of the composition to be used for ease of opening. The outermost edge of the lid rests just below the area containing the composition. This edge is patterned with a tightly wound golden scrollwork design. The base side decoration is a little more intricate. Here, golden filigree rolls effortlessly like a soothing ocean current.
Gold leaf and aluminum powder enhance numerous areas within the scene. The grass behind the characters glows along with the plants to the right and left. The dresses worn by the ladies shine like precious gem stones. Both the gold and the aluminum are used here. This radiance is made all the more lustrous because of the general flatness found in the log cabin to the left.
This box rests upon four slightly rounded feet. The traditional Fedoskino insignia is located within the lid's interior painted gold. Upon completion of the piece the artist signs their name, the village name of Fedoskino and the year of 1998 of which the piece was finished along the bottom of the composition.
