The ports of the world have offered, and will continue to offer, a vast variety of story and history. Through the good times and the bad, these calm water docks have seen it all. Between the barnacles frozen in place, underneath the mussels and within the slippery threads of dock wood; this is where they can be found. The jubilation as well as the tragedy. Storms batter and inventors rebuild. It is a never ending cycle that links man and the sea forever and then some.

Immigration. The arrival to a new world, possibly part of an escape from the old. Families reunite and individuals follow the dream.

Exploration. The need to find something more, to chase the shadow of the sun. Expanding and advancing the horizons in order to trade, sell and secure.

War. Tides and currents carry soldiers of all kinds into the lion's den. Naval intimidation, secretive attack, the slow study of the enemy under night's blanket coverage.

Mother nature. The winds howl and the surge overwhelms. Hurricanes prove who is really in control.

The ports of the world hold tales of romance, piracy, plunder and prophecy. From Greek legend to modern intervention, the tales are endless. The sea covers almost the entire planet, memories will always have a place to call their home.

This intriguing piece of authentic Russian artistry was composed by the talented Ya. Karavaev from the village of Fedoskino. This piece has a great deal of personality within its layers. The setting is very genuine, it offers a damp elegance that exudes the salty splendor of the sea. It feels as if the ocean were right there, finger tip ready. The colors and the details that they've been shaped into, these are what carry the moment.

Oil-based paint is the primary medium used to compose the scene. What is so unique about this composition is that so many different things can be going on at the same time. The sea is not singular in its dolling out of experiences to those in the immediate and or eventual vicinity. A son gives his father a simple toy that he made in class. This object of affection will be carried by his father as he embarks on yet another treacherous fishing trip. To the south, an epic storm recedes. Heavy rains, falling in powerful sheets, kept this humble port from continuing business for nearly a week. Now, the fishermen scatter like ants at a leftover laden picnic. The early bird catches the catch. And then the sails begin to rise upon the masts of the Russian Tall Ship that hopes to open trade with the Japanese. There will be stories, there will be legends, there will never be a dull moment. Not here, not ever.

The box is constructed from paper-mache made in the village of Fedoskino. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the work while dark red lacquer completes the interior of the box. A hinge is fastened to the top of the composition to be used for ease of opening. All four base sides have been decorated with two bands of lustrous gold paint that run parallel to one another. The lower band is slightly wider than the other.

Details dominate here. From the frozen chill of the water's edge to the water logged posts of the pier, masterful representations of realism. There is a great deal of depth within this scene as well. The majesty of the background ship, the wrap of the coastline to the far background right and the quickly changing horizon build the distance considerably. Whether it is the purples and grays that live within the bellowing clouds or the glossy olive and white that develops the icy surface where the boat is trapped; this composition has multiple features throughout to attract.
