"Don't get near me in the winter."
I don't hunt them in spring or summer
Then their fur is bad 'cause it fades.
Grandpa Mazay does not shoot the hares during the flood – he'll get them during winter time. Human nature duality? Probably not, Mazay lives in 18th century rural Russia where rabbit fur and meat is a means for survival. His small village has no huge supermarket or a vegetarian diet store. Mazay lives in harmony with nature, letting others live and getting by on what is needed. The peasant loves the forest and loves the animals. And in time of natural disaster, he takes care of the small animals with compassion. Read the famous poem “Ded Masay and the Hares (1870)” by N.A . Nekrasov.
This exquisite landscape is painted with oil paint over skillfully selected and carved pieces of inlaid mother of pearl. A cold humid atmosphere of a spring flood is accented by the use of crushed mother of pearl paint. As if crystals of ice the tree trunks shimmer with glowing mother of pearl paint. While the river is flooded, snow mostly melted, large chunks of ice still float around. These are represented by the inlaid pieces of pearl. Little rabbits are scattered all over the sinking islands. The poor creatures shimmer in the cold early spring air, anxious to be rescued by grandfather Mazay. Although they fear the old hunter, who chases them in the winter, they're even more scared of the rising waters. Use a magnifying glass to find all 73 rabbits in this picture : )
