Vladimir Sedov, a well known master from Kholuy, composes this pure piece of Russian lacquer artistry. Vivid color and precise brushwork dictate a composition that is as geometrically sound as it is beautiful. The artist is a laureate of Lenin Komsomol. He was awarded two silver and four bronze medals by the committee of the Exhibition of National Economy's Achievements.
Here Sedov depicts a view of one of the most fascinating structures in all of Russia, the world-famous palace and fountain ensemble of Peterhof. Founded in the very beginning of the eighteenth century by Emperor Peter the Great, not far from his new northern capital St. Petersburg, Peterhof was intended to become the most splendid official royal summer residence. Credit for its creation should go to a great number of eminent architects, artists, and anonymous folk craftsmen. Its wonderful parks, 176 fountains of various forms and styles and four cascades, majestic palaces, numerous gilded statues of ancient gods and heroes, remarkable collections of sculpture, painting and works of the minor arts make Peterhof a veritable gem of art, often called "Capital of Fountains", unique in the world. After 1917 the Peterhof ensemble was taken into state custody and turned into an architecture and art museum. Nowadays, due to the unforgettable beauty of its fountains, parks and palaces, Peterhof has become the most attractive for numerous Russian and foreign visitors suburban royal park and palace ensemble of the northern Russia's capital. To feel happy, to make their spirits high, people often come to Peterhof and enjoy its magical radiance.
Egg-tempera paint is the primary medium used to compose this vivid art work. The water glows with aquatic animation. You can almost feel the mist as it falls in sheets from the powerful fountains. The lines of the buildings are painted with a traditional presence. Postcard craftsmanship. Sea blue and baby blue dominate the water works. Auburn, red, teal, caramel, and olive green make up the remaining palette that Sedov dips his imagination into. Aluminum paint composes the shingles on the roofs of a few of the smaller structures.
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache made in the village of Kholui. The gold contours and the gold used for the central monument of Sampson and the Lion, illuminates the entire piece with a jeweled elegance. The identical golden filigree patterns , which frame the lid's composition as well as the base of the box, appear like delicate butterflies which cling together quite gracefully.
The exterior of the piece is painted with black lacquer while the interior is painted with red lacquer. The lid removes easily without hinge. Upon completion of the piece the artist writes his name, the title of the piece, and the village name of Kholui on the bottom of the composition in gold paint.
Materials: Paper-mache, egg-tempera paint, gold paint, aluminum paint and lacquer.
