This miniature features a middle-aged Russian noble woman, or boyaryshina, posing next to one of the fences of her estate. The scene is an interpretation of an oil on canvas original by the famous Russian painter Konstantin Makovsky. Many of his works are currently displayed in the collections of the Tretiakov Gallery in St. Petersburg. Examples of this scene on lacquer art can be found in several books, including V. Guliayev's RUSSIAN LACQUERED MINIATURES on pages 44 and 45, L. Pirogova's book 200 YEARS OF RUSSIAN LACQUERY on page 56, as well as on page 65 of N. Krestovskaya's MASTERPIECES OF RUSSIAN FOLK ART: LACQUERED MINIATURES--FEDOSKINO.
Oil-based paint is the main medium used to paint this composition. The palette is bright and vibrant. The landscape stretches with endless lines into the horizon. The girl is painted with glowing colors that express her burning spirit and inner beauty. There is a great appeal that comes from a well framed composition. Aesthetic amazement is definitely present, which catches the eye and warms the heart.
The box is made out of paper-mache made in Fedoskino. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box; clear lacquer is added in layers that are polished to a gleaming finish. Gold ornamentation frames the composition dye resist covers the rest of the exterior as a cap to the decoration. The box has a hinge to its left and rests on four rounded feet. Upon completing the work on this piece the artist writes Fedoskino, 2000, and signs her name on the bottom of the composition.
Materials: paper-mache, oil-based paint, gold, aluminum, and lacquer.
