really annoying gif animation The world of linux is trully amazing!

03.28.2001 Problem: old scanner At Fry's electronics I could not resist to purchase a SCSI 32bit Umax scanner for just $59.99 .A little while ago I read about such machines at the SANE web page at http://www.mostang.com/sane. Now I had to make it work with my RedHat workstation...

The scanner came out of its box, along with all the neccesary wiring, adapters, cards and Windows95 installation guide. The ISA SCSI interface did not look too promising at at all. Just one look at the SCSI documentation at http://www.danbbs.dk/~dino/SCSI/SCSI2.html made me want to get out the reciept and take the scanner back. One resource on the web, said these cards do not work at all...

After apporximatly 40 minutes of searching the web a solution was found: I had to run the /lib/modules/2.2.16-22/scsi/g_NCR5380.o module on the card via: $ insmod g_NCR5380 ncr_irq=255 ncr_addr=0x2C0 dtc_3181e=1
Then, I had to install the backend and the frontend software and drivers:

To begin, I downloaded the lates sane distibution from the above address, and since I got the scanner eventually to work I placed a copy of the tarball here: ftp.sunbirds.com/pub/linux/scanner/sane-1.0.3.tar.gz
Being root,I then untared and ungzipped the file via $ tar -zvxf sane-1.0.3.tar.gz
It created a directory sane-1.0.3

I then downloaded the sane-umax-1.0.4-build-25.tar.gz backend driver for the scanner from http://www.rauch-domain.de/sane-umax/sane-umax-download.html, here I saved a copy at sane-umax-1.0.4-build-25.tar.gz

Being root, I unpacked this tarball $ tar -zvxf sane-umax-1.0.4-build-25.tar.gz
this create the directory sane-umax-1.0.4-build-25

Now, the install......
I dowe into sane-umax-1.0.4-build-25 and found a README-PATCH file, which told me what to do: You need the recent SANE source version from http://www.mostang.com/sane

Type
cpsane path-to-sane-directory/sane-x.xx
to apply the path to the selected sane-source directory
e.g:
cpsane /home/hello/sane-1.0.4

then enter the sane-directory and do
configure
make

and as root:
make install

After all this I was able to test the scanner vi: $/sane-1.0.3/tools/find-scanner
Output:
find-scanner: found scanner "UMAX Astra 1220S V1.3" at device /dev/sg0
find-scanner: found scanner "UMAX Astra 1220S V1.3" at device /dev/sga

Uuurrraaa!!! its alive!

Now I ran the xscanimage and got my first scan: - the beautiful image of the Snowmaiden was on my GNOME desctop: Picture of Snow Maiden

Thank you for reading this. P.T.
