| Yuri Vavanov was born in Dobrynskoye of the Vladimir region.  He attended the Mstera Vocational Art School from 1951-1955, where he studied under E. Zonina.  He began working at the Proletarian Art Factory in the same year as his graduation.  Vavanov became a member of the USSR Union of Artist in 1965.
