Malkov Viktor Nikolaevich (1952)

Malkov Viktor Nikolaevich was born in 1952 in the town of Kostroma. Now he resides in the village of Kholui, Ivanovo Region.
In 1972 the artist finished the Kholui Art School where he studied under Starikov N.V., Turunov I.I. and Novosiolov V.K. One can still see a little of their influence in Malkov's work, especially in the pieces that reflect a strong folk art theme. His Diploma work was a composition “Pedlars ”.
Malkov V.N. is best known for his works: "Russian Square Dance" (1989), "Dancing" (1989), "Smithy" (1989), and "Chatterboxes" (1991). As many of these titles suggest, and by the boxes we have offered our customers, Malkov's artistry reflects an on going theme of traditional social interactions in Russian society.
Works by Malkov V.N. are exhibited in Kholui Museum of lacquered miniature.
At present Viktor works at the Kholui Craft Workshops. He paints in the style of Kholui lacquered miniature, using tempera paints. Themes of his works are Russian folk songs, bylinas, legends and traditions.
Before starting to paint a composition, the artist searches for all necessary material to express a chosen theme as well as possible.
While working at a composition Viktor pays a special attention to painting ornamental patterns of Russian costume and that is why his works are easily recognizable by expressive painting of clothes. He applies in work his personal artistic methods that he prefers to keep in a secret. His compositions are mainly painted in ochre tones.
Works by the famous Kholui artists Belov V.A., Baburin N.I and Krotov V.A. had a great influence on the artist’s creative work.
In his free time Malkov likes to read books on Russian history.
